Why this role, right now
AI Engineer is one of the fastest-growing hiring categories in tech right now — and most companies will need far more of them than any other AI-specialist role, including embedded specialists like Forward Deployed Engineers. If you're building your own AI-powered product rather than customizing someone else's for a single client, this is the seat to fill first.

What do AI Engineers do?
AI Engineers are developers who build on large language models, pairing strong software engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience across the modern AI stack. They design and implement AI features end to end — prompt and retrieval pipelines, model integration, evaluation, and the infrastructure to run AI reliably in production. AI Engineers play a key role in the development lifecycle, from deciding where AI belongs to proving its output can be trusted.
Core responsibilities
- Design and ship LLM-powered features and agentic systems
- Build RAG pipelines; manage context and retrieval
- Create evals and guardrails for output quality
- Integrate model APIs and orchestration frameworks
- Own AI infrastructure — deployment, observability, and cost
What to look for
- Hands-on, shipped experience with at least one agent framework or RAG pipeline — not just a tutorial project
- Fluency with AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) as part of their actual workflow, not a novelty
- Genuine curiosity about new model capabilities — not just familiarity with whichever one they used last
- Systems thinking across the model, retrieval, and product layers — not just prompt-level tinkering
